(Red) – In a rally outside the European Parliament in Strasbourg, hundreds of Iranians, supporters of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), urgently called on the EU to designate both the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) and Tehran’s Ministry of Intelligence (MOIS) as terrorist organizations.

The rally coincided with the Parliament plenary session addressing Iranian terrorism. As Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and the Commission discussed Iran’s state-sponsored terrorism, the rally highlighted the urgent need for a firm EU response to the Iranian regime’s actions.

Participants carried green, white, and red banners representing the original Iranian flag and expressed solidarity with the victims of recent atrocities, including the alarming, ongoing surge in executions. Since Masoud Pezeshkian took office in July as the president, 342 Iranians have been put to death, including 13 women.

Tuesday’s rally emphasized the importance of taking decisive measures against the IRGC, Iran’s main tool for suppression at home and for warmongering and terrorism abroad. The Iranians advocated for the closure of Iran’s diplomatic missions in Europe, the “epicenters of espionage and covert operations” against Iranian expatriates and European citizens alike.

Afchine Alavi, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the NCRI, the coalition of Iranian democratic opposition movements said: “The terrorist designation of IRGC is long overdue. The designation of the IRGC has been delayed solely due to appeasement policies and illegitimate political considerations, which have only encouraged the regime to continue its destructive policies and even bring terrorism to the heart of Europe.”

While addressing a recent conference in Berlin, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the NCRI, emphasized the Iranian regime’s role in regional conflicts. She stated: “After one year, there remains no doubt that the Iranian regime is the main instigator of the tragic conflict in the Middle East and a principal party in this war. The regime ignites these flames to evade the uprising of the Iranian people.” Rajavi emphasized the long-standing view of the Iranian Resistance that the Iranian dictatorship is the “head of the snake of warmongering and terrorism in this region.”

The protesters welcomed the EU’s recent decision to sanction the Iranian regime’s airlines, individuals, and entities, announced on October 14. However, they also noted that these measures are insufficient on their own.

The EU must immediately designate the Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. Reluctance and procrastination in doing so will only embolden Iran’s ruling dictatorship, encouraging it to intensify its pursuits of terrorism and warmongering and to accelerate its program to develop nuclear weapons,” Mrs. Rajavi said.

The European Parliament has been a vocal critic of Iran’s clerical regime, condemning its brutal suppression of democratic aspirations and its military support for conflicts, including the war against Ukraine. MEPs have consistently called for the inclusion of the IRGC on the EU’s terrorist list.

In a statement last June, 4,000 lawmakers from 50 countries, including 34 parliamentary majorities, joined 137 former heads of state, in voicing support for blacklisting the IRGC and Rajavi’s Ten-point Plan.

The plenary discussion marked a pivotal moment in the ongoing dialogue about Iran’s role in regional instability and the necessity for a unified and robust response from the European Union. And now it’s time to act.

  1. It is of great concern to both the Iranian community and the international community not to be indifferent to what the Iranian regime is doing both in Iran and abroad.
It is encouraging that activities like the demonstration in Strasbourg are taking place, drawing attention to the issue and voicing the Iranian people’s position on this. It is time to designate the IRGC, the main tool of repression in Iran, and warmonger and terrorism abroad.
