Maryam Rajavi and the NCRI show the path to the new Iran

At the “Free Iran World Summit 2025” in Rome, the president-elect of the NCRI made a clear point – regime change must be operated by the Iranian people.

(KL) – Today, the “National Council of Resistance in Iran” (NCRI) is worldwide recognized as the representation of the Iranian people abroad. This is widely due to the tremendous work delivered all over the world by this Iranian opposition organization, and the “10-point-plan for a democratic transition of Iran” presented by Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the NCRI. The NCRI multiplies conferences and meeting all over the world – after Washington and Berlin a couple of days ago, the NCRI participated last week in the “Free Iran World Summit 2025” in Rome, Italy.

The third Free Iran World Summit in Rome gathered global political leaders, lawmakers, human rights advocates, and Iranian expatriates in a unified call for regime change and the establishment of a democratic republic in Iran.

Among the prominent figures attending this summit were Charles Michel, former President of the European Council; Matteo Renzi, former Prime Minister of Italy; Michèle Alliot-Marie, France’s Foreign, Defense, Interior, and Justice Minister; James Cleverly, former UK Foreign Secretary and Home Secretary; Rudy Giuliani, former Mayor of New York City; Ingrid Betancourt, former Colombian presidential candidate; U.S. Ambassadors Stephen Rapp and Carla Sands; members of the Italian Parliament and Senate; and representatives of Iranian communities across Italy.

The high level support for the NCRI and Iran is very important, but soon, there must be more than words of support. Virtually everybody condemns today the mullah’s regime, the violence of the IRCG which are considered being a terrorist organization, virtually everybody condemns the executions in Iran and the arbitrary “justice” system which kills more and more opposition activists, journalists, artists, scientists and simple citizens.

If the support of all these high level politicians is important, the most important declaration in Rome came from NCRI president-elect Maryam Rajavi who underlined that the change in Iran must come from the Iranian people. This means that change in Iran can not be enforced by warfare, such as the bombings of the Iranian nuclear infrastructure by Israel and the USA, the change must come from inside the country. This means that the western world may not enter into an appeasement policy with the mullah’s regime, and this leads to the question: what can the world do to support the work of the NCRI and especially, to bring the democratic 10-point-plan on the way?

Maryam Rajavi said “today, our country stands on the threshold of a profound transformation. This change is being shaped by the people of Iran and their resistance – a nationwide movement that, through the highest sacrifices, including 100,000 martyrs, and with a clear roadmap and vision, heralds the dawn of a democratic republic in Iran.”

Rajavi added, “this [democratic] movement has been knocked down time and again, but like the phoenix, it has always risen from its own ashes.” For decades, Iran has suffered oppressive regimes, first the Shah’s regime, now an even worse theocracy. “Now, after decades of immense suffering endured by the Iranian people – marked by executions, massacres, and even acts of genocide -, remnants of the Shah’s regime have seized the opportunity, believing that, as the religious dictatorship nears its end, the mantle of tyranny can be passed back to the monarchy. This is precisely why the Shah’s son is desperately seeking out the regime’s Revolutionary Guards.” Maryam Rajavi described the difficult situation: “We are confronted with a historical paradox: from the Shah to Sheikh, and now, from the Sheikh back to the Shah. But the reality is that the march of time does not allow a return to the past. No one goes back to yesterday. That is why tomorrow belongs to us, and we belong to tomorrow.”

Actually, there are three options for Iran. Option 1 – nothing changes and the mullah’s stay in power, continuing their bloody deeds and the oppression of the Iranian people. Option 2 – the revival of the dictatorship of the Shah and having experienced the Shah’s regime, the Iranian people will not chose a remake of this brutal system. This only leaves option 3 – which is a peaceful transition towards a democratic Iran, however difficult this way may be.

The NCRI 10-point-plan for a peaceful transition to democracy includes the formation of a provisional government, elections within six months, and a constituent assembly to draft a new constitution. The plan underlines the movement’s commitment to secular governance, gender equality, ethnic autonomy, a nuclear weapons free Iran and peaceful relations with neighboring countries.

Maryam Rajavi concluded by highlighting the NCRI’s proposal for the formation of a National Solidarity Front that rests on three pillars:

  1. It unites forces committed to establishing a democratic and independent republic.

  2. It categorically rejects the religious dictatorship, the rule of the Velayat-e Faqih, and all affiliated factions.

  3. It is firmly founded on the principle of the separation of religion and state.

Now that the NCRI has drawn a path to democracy, now that the western world has expressed it’s support for the NCRI and the 10-point-plan, friendly words must transform into concrete action to support the NCRI and the National Solidarity Front. Nobody knows the situation and the needs of the Iranian people better than the NCRI and their partners and supports in Iran. So, the NRCI will have to act as an interface between the Iranian people and the western world. NCRI must tell the western governments what they need, how the West can help the Iranian people and what strategies to apply to end the brutal mullah’s regime.

Even if all the speeches of solidarity and support are important and nice to hear, it will take more than speeches from politicians to overcome the mullah’s regime. Whatever the peaceful movement of NCRI requests in terms of support, it should get it. The 10-point-plan is probably the only chance to establish a modern democracy after decades of different dictatorships – and this chance must be seized. Everybody should now think of how to help the process of establishing a democratic Iran and how to help the NCRI to achieve this utmost noble goal.
