Petition – Stop the energy madness!

(KL) – Even if the tariff, energy and investment agreement pushed through by Donald Trump has not yet been ratified, this treaty process between the US and the EU must be stopped, as it means nothing less than the end of the global climate. The fact that the American president does not believe in climate change is no reason for the European Commission to bow to his madness and accept a “deal” that will put an end to all attempts to save the climate and thus our planet.

Donald Trump, who does not like to adhere to the well-founded findings of science, continues to deny climate change. Floods, droughts, record levels of global warming, threatened harvests, extremely severe weather events – yet Donald Trump continues to rely on fossil fuels, especially fracking gas. It is scandalous that the President of the European Commission is prepared to spend $750 billion by 2029 on this gas, which not only accelerates climate change, but also undermines European efforts to combat global warming.

It is also scandalous in that France has an extraordinary treasure in the form of natural hydrogen, the cleanest and cheapest source of energy, which should be used at the European level. But instead of doing everything possible to ensure that these natural hydrogen reserves can be used, those responsible are doing everything they can to slow down the process, most likely under pressure from the nuclear lobby, as the French president still wants to build 14 EPRs, i.e., power plants like the one in Flamanville in Normandy. As a reminder, the EPR in Flamanville will have cost €27.3 billion (instead of the €3.3 billion budgeted at the start of construction) and was completed 12 years late. And since it went into operation, this power plant has been almost constantly shut down due to numerous breakdowns. But given the sums involved, the French government prefers to continue relying on expensive and unreliable technologies instead of focusing on natural hydrogen.

The agreement that the European Commission wants to sign with the US is criminal. Apart from the fact that the US president is currently signing agreements everywhere and selling much more energy than the US energy industry produces, Europe cannot accept such subjugation to the US and its capricious president. Trump is supported in this by people like the scandal-ridden Ursula von der Leyen, who is now attacking the future of our planet to serve the financial interests of a few dozen super-rich people who couldn’t care less about the future of our children and grandchildren.

The Strasbourg-based association H2Strasbourg and its chairman Pascal Houssais have launched a petition aimed at forcing European institutions to reconsider their plans to destroy the world. All this to please an old American man who is clearly no longer in full possession of his mental faculties.

And since politics no longer acts in the interests of citizens, it is up to civil society to resist corrupt, dangerous, warlike policies that are light years away from everything science has been saying since 1960 and the Club of Rome. We cannot wait for these “responsible” politicians to come to their senses or disappear; we must act now if we want future generations to still be able to live on this planet.
