Where does the Iranian opposition’s brave struggle lead?

Last week, during the UN General Assembly, there were two large demonstrations by Iranian exiles in New York demanding democratic change in their country.

(KL/KD) – Events surrounding Iran are coming thick and fast. While the vast majority of Iranians wants democratic change, as demanded by the National Council of Resistance in Iran (NCRI), the mullahs’ regime is tightening the screws. Never before have so many opposition figures been executed in Iran as in the last month (190 executions!), and at the same time as the heavily criticized appearance of Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian before the UN General Assembly, a whole group of opponents of the regime was executed. In Iran, ruled by the oh-so-pious mullahs, a human life is not worth much.

As there has been no progress in the nuclear negotiations with Iran, the “snapback mechanism” was triggered last week, reimposing sanctions on Iran, especially since it became known that Russia will build four nuclear power plants in Iran. In this situation, it is clear that resistance among exiled Iranians and opposition figures within the country is growing, that support for the NCRI is growing worldwide, and that at the same time, there is a lack of leverage to undermine the murderous mullah regime. The theocracy in Iran continues to cling to power with brutal force, and there is now an urgent need for ideas on how to translate political support for the NCRI and its 10-point plan for transition to a democratic Iran into concrete assistance.

This 10-point plan, championed by the NCRI’s president-elect Maryam Rajavi, is recognized worldwide and is widely regarded as the ideal solution for bringing peace to the Middle East. Every week, huge demonstrations are held somewhere in the world in support of this plan and the NCRI, but it is unclear how this global support can be translated into concrete action in Iran itself.

Meanwhile, the situation in Iran is worsening almost daily. With state terror and an incredible number of executions, the mullahs, with the help of the terrorist Revolutionary Guards, are maintaining a regime that is difficult to oppose in Iran without risking arrest and execution. The fact that there is great international solidarity with the NCRI and the Iranian people is one thing. But now we need ways to decisively weaken the mullahs’ regime. Sanctions against Iran for continuing its nuclear program are not the solution. The example of Russia shows how ineffective sanctions are against countries that are organized in strong international organizations, and in Iran, the sanctions will not affect the mullahs, but the already oppressed population.

No one knows the circumstances in Iran better than the NCRI and its president-elect Maryam Rajavi. They should tell the world how best to help the opposition forces in Iran, because the weekly demonstrations by Iranian exiles certainly provide important moral support for the opposition in Iran, but they cannot bring down the mullahs’ terrorist regime.

The situation in Iran continues to worsen, global protests are growing louder, and it is now time to develop concrete approaches to ending the state terrorism of the aging mullahs. These approaches should come from the NCRI, because no one in the West has any idea how to effectively support the opposition in Iran. It is time for this theocratic and murderous nightmare to end.
