We have today a real understanding among our citizens in member states that actually the European level matters. That come up in a very perverse way, very ironic. It comes up with the anti-Europeanism which has developed at the national level in so many countries with the development with populist politics. Those people who actually reject that small minded nationalistic mindset, can no longer take Europe for granted: It is something we have to fight for, if we want to keep it. I am from the United Kingdom, in my country we had over one million people on the streets, waving European Union flags, saying we want our future to be in the European Union. So I believe these elections will be the most engaged we have ever seen to the European Parliament. And we don’t know yet if we are not going to take part…

Heute wissen die Bürger der Mitgliedsstaaten, dass die europäische Ebene wirklich zählt. Diese Erkenntnis hat sich auf eine perverse, ironische Weise gebildet. Sie wuchs zusammen mit dem Anti-Europäertum, das sich in vielen Ländern auf der nationalen Ebene mit der populistischen Politik entwickelt hat. Jene Menschen, die diese kleingeistige, nationalistische Einstellung zurückweisen, müssen erkennen, dass Europa keine Selbstverständlichkeit mehr ist: Es wird etwas, wofür wir kämpfen müssen, wenn wir es bewahren wollen. Ich komme aus dem Vereinigten Königreich, in meinem Land sind über eine Million Menschen mit Fahnen der Europäischen Union auf die Straße gegangen und haben gesagt: Wir wollen unsere Zukunft innerhalb der Union. Somit glaube ich, dass diese EU-Wahlen die umstrittensten jemals sein werden. Und wer weiß, ob wir nicht doch noch teilnehmen…

Aujourd’hui, les citoyens des Etats membres savent que l’Europe compte vraiment. Cette prise de conscience s’est faite de manière très perverse, très ironique. Elle a grandi avec l’attitude anti-européenne qui s’est développée au niveau national dans de nombreux pays, avec la politique populiste. Ceux qui refusent cette attitude étriquée et nationaliste doivent se rendre compte que l’Europe n’est plus une évidence : l’Europe devient un concept pour lequel nous devons nous battre si nous souhaitons la garder. Je viens du Royaume Uni et dans mon pays, plus d’un million de personnes sont descendues dans la rue en brandissant le drapeau européen et ont dit : Nous demandons notre avenir au sein de l’Union ! Ainsi, je pense que cette élection européenne sera la plus contestée de tous les temps. Et qui sait si nous ne finirons pas par y participer, finalement…
