In Belgium we have to vote, at least to go to the polling station. For me it is a good system, because you ask people once in a couple of years to think about it and to cast a vote, and even they are not obliged to vote, they just have to show up in the polling station, but most of the people do it, so we have a high rate of turn out. Even if I would be not forced to vote, I would go. Because you can think – and you are right to think that a lot is going wrong, and the system has to improved, but then you have to take responsibility as an individual to contribute and make a political choice, it is part of our civil rights. If we want to protect our civil right – and they are under pressure – then you should take your responsibility and vote for those who are standing for that rights and will defend them. When you really want to be a part of the system you have to take responsibility and use this one occasion in five years to point the direction in which this European Union should go.

In Belgien gilt Wahlpflicht. Für mich ist das ein gutes System, denn so müssen die Menschen alle paar Jahre über die Politik nachdenken und ihre Stimme abgegeben. Man ist letztlich nicht gezwungen zu wählen, aber man muss in das Wahllokal kommen. Die meisten wählen dann auch, und so haben wir eine hohe Wahlbeteiligung. Doch selbst, wenn ich nicht dazu gezwungen wäre, würde ich hingehen. Sie mögen ja denken – und Sie haben Recht damit –, dass vieles falsch läuft und das System besser werden muss, aber dann haben Sie auch die Verantwortung als Individuum mit ihrer politischen Wahl dazu beizutragen. Das ist Teil Ihrer Bürgerrechte. Wenn Sie diese Rechte wahren wollen – und sie stehen unter Druck – sollten sie für jene stimmen, die diese Rechte verteidigen. Wenn Sie also wirklich Teil des Systems sein wollen, müssen Sie ihrer Verantwortung gerecht werden und die Chance nutzen, alle fünf Jahre die Richtung mitzubestimmen, in die die Europäische Union gehen soll.

En Belgique, le vote est obligatoire. Je pense qu’il s’agit d’un bon système, car les gens doivent ainsi réfléchir au moins une fois tous les quelques ans à la politique, et ensuite, voter. En fin de compte, vous n’êtes pas obligé de voter, mais vous devez vous présenter dans un bureau de vote. La plupart des gens votent à ce moment-là, et ceci explique notre taux de participation élevé. Pourtant, même sans y être obligé, j’irais voter quand même. Vous pensez peut-être –et vous avez raison– que de nombreuses choses ne fonctionnent pas comme il faudrait et que le système doit être amélioré – si vous partagez cette pensée, alors il faudra assumer une certaine responsabilité en tant qu’individu à contribuer à ces améliorations en votant. Ceci fait partie de vos droits civiques. Si vous tenez à garder ces droits – qui sont actuellement sous pression – alors il convient de voter pour ceux qui défendent vos droits. Si vous souhaitez vraiment faire partie du système, il faudra assumer cette responsabilité et voter une fois tous les 5 ans pour déterminer la direction que l’Union Européenne prendra.
